My family and I moved to Michigan three years ago after firmly believing that God called us here. We packed up our home, our family -- our whole life -- in only 9 days.
A bold step of faith brought us here with no job, no home of our own and most certainly no plan on where to educate our 4 children. My husband, originally from this area, wanted us to consider West Side Christian School for our children. (They are the 4th generation to attend here!)
When we "checked out" West Side Christian School that summer, I couldn't in my head rationalize how we could possibly pay for 3 children to attend here when neither of us had a job. Gord Bylsma led us around from room to room but my heart wasn't connected.
After the tour, Gord turned to us both and said, "A classroom is a classroom, but the best part of West Side Christian School is the community of families that will become like a family to you." A community that loves the Lord. Loves each other. Loves God's creation. Loves our local and global communities.
Those words were like a healing balm to me. My husband and I knew right then that we would do whatever we needed to do to have not just our kids, but our entire family, a part of this community life.
Fast forward two years. God opened the door for me to teach 5th grade at West Side Christian School! I can honestly say that teaching in a school that puts Christ first in all things is the only place I want to be.
Christian education is a powerful tool that God uses on a daily basis to draw our children nearer to Him. His Word is in everything. There is not one subject taught that you can't find God's fingerprints. In math, God teaches us to number our days. He multiplies, divides and He gives and takes away. We are in awe of Him during science, seeing how as our Creator he knit us together. This year, my class learned that God's song can be heard in the wind and in the laughter of their classmates and His plan unfolds through historical events and the lives of individuals - including themselves. They are developing eyes to see Him and ears to hear Him.
Every subject that I teach is saturated with Christ so that our students will not only grow in knowledge but they will grow in their character. And my front-row seat to all of this is all because we stepped out in faith and into Christian education here at West Side Christian School...priceless!
