$868.17 – the total amount of money raised by the middle school microbusinesses at the Christmas Marketplace on December 5th for Kairos Christian School our sister school in Guatemala! THANK YOU to those who shopped and supported our student businesses! This brings the total amount raised by our students to over $2500! You can read more about our partnership with Kairos here, and see how funds the West Side Christian School community has raised have been used to support building projects and supply classrooms there. Funds raised from this year’s Christmas Marketplace will be added to other money raised to further fund a second floor addition to the school.
You can see from these pictures that our middle school students got pretty creative in their business ideas. $25 microloans are available to those who need funding to cover start-up costs, and while a few students took advantage of the microloans, most of them covered their input costs because they were just eager to be part of this fundraising effort. 19 students ran 12 businesses that featured tasty treats like popcorn balls, brownies, scotcheroos, homemade applesauce, hot chocolate mix and more, plus artwork, accessories, serving dishes, and even a popcorn machine! Overheard from these budding entrepreneurs: “I love to make crafts!” “It was so fun to have my own business. I love to count money and be in charge of it!” “It was fun to do with someone else.”
Our school’s tagline is “Beyond Belief” and this year’s theme is “Be the Light”. These aren’t just catchy words; they reflect our desire to build the kingdom of God in and through West Side Christian School, and these student-run businesses provide our students with an opportunity to put their faith into action on behalf of others, even others they don’t know.
“I eventually want to go to Guatemala but can’t yet. So this was my way to get involved,” noted one student. “I think it is cool to know that I was helping kids in another place,” said another. Everyone said they will definitely do it again! Beyond Belief. Be the Light.
