I Don't Like the Last Day

I love teaching! I love my students! I love summer!

There is such a buzz of excitement in the air the last few weeks of school. “No more homework, no more tests!,” we all chant (myself included). We talk about our summer plans. Where we will travel. What we will read.

“Keep doing math!” I say. We keep dreaming of summer and each day gets us closer.

BUT I don’t like the last day.

We take down pictures, bulletin boards and clean out desks. We wash, wipe and put away.

I don’t like the last day.

The days fly by. We share popsicles and laughs. We wrap up all the loose ends.

I don’t like the last day.

We shout that this is the last ________ and we shout with joy.

BUT I don’t like the last day.

We get in our long awaited field trips and class picnics. We celebrate growth and progress. We get prepared for the next grade.

I don’t like the last day.

We look forward to no alarm clocks, no assignment deadlines, no backpacks or lunches to make.

I don’t like the last day.

But, it inevitably comes. The class arrives already checked out and I paste a smile on my face. “It is finally here. Hip, hip hooray!” we shout and laugh but I have a lump in my throat. This day goes so slow for them and it has wings for me. How did we get here so fast? Where did the days go? We are getting ready to say goodbye. I don’t want to! The students write their Top 10 things they loved about this year and they kindly put my name on their list. It now becomes even harder. I will gather them in a circle and pray for them and release them to go. The bell rings…

Wait…let me look at you one more time. My how you have grown inside and out.Wait…did I tell you how proud I am of all of you? Wait…this is the LAST time this ENTIRE group will be together. Wait…one more hug or high five. Wait…one last time you are mine.

Wait…I have something for you. It is a piece of my heart. Keep it. I don’t need it back.

Sigh! It’s time to say goodbye.

Now go…and make a difference. I love you all! It has been my pleasure being your teacher.
