West Side Christian School provides a wealth of programs to develop each child's God-given potential including classes in art, music, Spanish, snd physical education. In addition, students spend time in the technology lab throughout the week receiving specialized instruction and working on classroom assignments. Students also enjoy time each week in the library media center.
We view each student as an image-bearer of God who has the potential to give thanks to God through art. Students are taught art in sequential steps from grade to grade so that by the 8th grade, they have mastered a working art vocabulary, an awareness of art history, and the ability to create things using complex techniques in various art media.
Among them are cut paper, wire, clay, drawing with pencil, chalk and charcoal pencils and painting in tempera and watercolor. Design lessons cover such topics as size, shape, lines, textures, colors, perspective, figures and three-dimensional work. The creative work is displayed for parents and families each spring at a school Fine Arts Festival.
Singing and classroom music instruction is offered in each grade so students can experience God's gift of music. Students visit the music classroom weekly to develop skills and knowledge in rhythm, melody, harmony, form, tone color and expression. Integrated into the lessons is a study of music history, vocal styles, musical composition and music from different countries.
Each student is encouraged to learn how to play an instrument. String and instrumental training is provided in 5th through 8th grade with band and orchestra. Choir is offered in 7th and 8th grade. Emphasis is placed on developing good vocal techniques, learning new songs, and performing psalms and hymns. Our music students perform in school, nursing homes, music festivals and area churches.

Providing a quality education means equipping students with the skills, capabilities and confidences necessary to face the challenges of our day. One of the critical areas where our students will be challenged is in technology. When students leave WSCS, they must be able to use technology to learn, grow and ultimately provide themselves and others with a world that allows Christ’s kingdom to increase.
A network of 30 computers in our Technology Lab form the backbone of an exceptional technology program at WSCS. In addition, there is at least one computer in nearly every classroom and a variety of educational software. Among the skills students acquire over the years is keyboarding, computer literacy, word processing, and creating and using a spreadsheet. Students are encouraged to explore their own interests by selecting a program of their choice when the Technology Lab is open for use during non-scheduled classroom time. Students can also access the internet under the guidelines of our Acceptable Use Policy.

Throughout all grades, we stress the importance of taking care of your body through good personal hygiene, a balanced diet and regular exercise. In early grades, we focus on activities such as hopping, skipping and jumping. After learning additional skills such as throwing and catching, students advance to team games and an extensive fitness program. Among the activities are soccer, football, basketball, softball, baseball, volleyball and gymnastics.
Students in 6th through 8th grad are encouraged to participate in many of the school's intramural sporting events. WSCS also offers and extensive interscholastic program for 7th and 8th graders in which they compete against students in soccer, basketball, baseball, softball and track events. For boys there's also wresting competitions and for girls there is volleyball. One-day tournament events are also held in golf, swimming and tennis.
Since Spanish is our country's second most-used language, WSCS began a Spanish foreign language program in 1992 for all grades. Our goal is to develop each student's ability to communicate in Spanish and to expose students to Spanish culture.
