Additional experience: BA Calvin College/physical education and health minor; PE teacher in Nebraska and Big Rapids.
My goal in PE is for students to develop the skills, work ethic, and joy necessary to participate in a life-long practice of physical activity. This is a great way for them to get out and enjoy God’s beautiful creation, and use the bodies God has given them. With this being my first job in a Christian school, it has really been fulfilling and enjoyable for me to talk about God every day with my students and help prepare them to be His disciples in this world. In a public school, my goal was to shine the light of Jesus to kids/families that may not know Him. Now I feel that my goal is to help my students be that light to others they come in contact with. What motivates me as a teacher is the opportunity I have to impact kids’ lives through relationships; I have the opportunity to show Christ through the relationships I build with students. What brings me joy at West Side Christian School is the time I get to spend with students outside of the classroom. Breaks, lunch, intramurals, and exploratories are all some of my favorite times to spend with students because of the freedom to get to know them better. When I am not teaching, I love to be outdoors and be active. My favorite hobby is fishing, but I also love to run, bike, hike, camp – especially if it is with my wife and daughter. And of course, I love competing in almost any sport.
